The Crossroads & Civic Center
Cupertino began where the Saratoga-Sunnyvale road crossed Stevens Creek Road. The Crossroads had the post office, the blacksmith and the general store; today Cali Mill Plaza and the Civic Center stand beside it.

A settlement called West Side grew up at the Crossroads of the Saratoga-Sunnyvale road, now De Anza Boulevard, and Stevens Creek Road. In 1904, when the post office needed a new name, the name of John T. Doyle’s Cupertino Wine Co. was given to the Crossroads, the post office and the Home Union Store, which became The Cupertino Store. (City of Cupertino)
Alexander Montgomery built the store on the corner of his ranch and moved it across the road when the railroad came; it was run by the Home Union for ten years before it was incorporated as the Cupertino Store. (Sawyer, 1922) William Baer’s blacksmith shop stood here too, repairing wagons and then the first Model Ts. (El Estoque)
For decades the R. Cali Brothers Feed Mill held the southeast corner; Cali Mill Plaza and City Hall have replaced it. (Wikipedia) The Crossroads District that surrounds it today is lined with shops and restaurants. (City of Cupertino)
The Civic Center on Torre Avenue holds City Hall, the Community Hall and the Cupertino Library, the busiest branch in the county system. (Wikipedia) It hosts the Earth and Arbor Day Festival in April and the Big Bunny 5K, whose 2027 race is on Saturday, March 6. (City of Cupertino)
