Phylloxera

The root louse that destroyed most of Cupertino’s vineyards around 1895 and turned the district to orchards.

Around 1895 phylloxera struck the area’s wine industry and destroyed about 75 percent of the vineyards in five years. A few growers grafted their vines; many more replanted with French prunes, peaches, apricots, cherries, plums, walnuts and almonds. Richard Heney of Monte Vista lost his first vineyard to it and replanted with French rooted vines.
